Second Story Addition

Building a second story isn’t as simple as sticking a new level onto an existing house. A second story addition is a transformative home project involving complex coordination of design, architecture and engineering. May Construction teamed up with brilliant Architect Kirk McKim with McKim Design Group, to ensure the layout of the new above garage second-story addition integrated seamlessly with the existing structure. Designing a smooth transition from the interior living space, adding valuable square footage, preserving the yard space and offering these creative San Jose homeowners the chance to design and customize their dream home.

The strategically placed staircase is as if it has always been there, flawlessly connecting levels without compromising functionality or safety. Starting from a blank slate, this magical couple teamed up with interior finish designer Jen Jordan to infuse their new space, with bold colors, vibrant personality and a blend of chic eclectic elements.

Every corner of this craft room reveals a story and showcases the one of kind whimsical fairy-like tree. The enchanted tree was designed for and built in this space, the light-up mushrooms, and cherry blossoms, set the stage for the hand painted mystic mural. The bright and playful colors dance across this lively room, complimenting the custom built craft cabinets built locally in San Jose. A wallpapered powder bathroom is comfortably placed behind a stunning barn door for both the crafter and the musician.

Comfort is crucial when it comes to long jam sessions, before the remodel the living room was full of guitars, keyboards and music sheets that desperately needed a space of their own. This San Jose addition allowed us to incorporate a music sanctuary. Complete with essential soundproofing techniques, intentional lighting and custom ample storage this studio was built to inspire.

A second story addition in the Bay Area is not just about adding extra space, it's about enhancing quality of life, preserving outdoor spaces, (which where, fun fact, the homeowners held their ceremony at) and enjoying the freedom to design your home to your fairytale, modern or traditional preferences. No room to move outwards? Move upwards, make your dreams of expansion possible, the options are endless. Contact to see what is possible for your home.
