The Acorn ADU

This San Jose ADU was a very special project for both the homeowners and May Construction. Having remodeled their entire main house right after having their first child, we got to return to this growing, now family of four, to design and build their backyard accessory dwelling unit   .

With both grandparents and children getting older it was time to have them near one another. By adding on to the existing detached garage set up the family for multigenerational living. A space where the grandparents could age in place, have their own independent living quarters all while remaining close to this expanding family

To create an ADA compliant, customized ADU,  wider doors openings and most importantly no curbs or thresholds throughout were a must. Keeping all the flooring at one level will ensure the ease of a wheelchair and/ or walker accessibility. The homeowners envisioned a modern cozy home, with the exterior to compliment the man house but still feel like a separate space. Creamy white exterior paint and blue trim, stand out against the bright canary yellow front door. The overhang provides font entry porch protection from the elements and a shaded place for Grandma to watch the kids in the yard.

Walking in, the interior is flooded with natural light thanks  to twin skylights and  a smartly placed transom window, which lets in the light while providing privacy from the main house and offering placement for their television. All details and furniture placement were precisely thought out during the design process.

Custom cabinetry utilizes every inch of space in this petite kitchen. The neutral tones in the Swiss coffee cabinets sets the stage for the decorative navy blue tile backsplash. This incredible L-shaped kitchen appears anything but tiny, with full size appliances and tall functional fridge pantry, proves that, with intentional design, a small living space can appear luxurious and chic.

Playful patterns and fun colors bring character to the design in the full bold blue Vanity bathroom. The neutral bathroom floor slopes gradually toward a linear drain at the back of the shower, allowing for a curbless entry and. Elements like the  Curb-less shower, teak shower bench and double polished nickel shower heads are tailored to universal design.  The show stopping full wall shower niche and tall bold blue vanity linen, maximizes storage and eclectic vibes.

French doors, a deep storage closet, separate utility room and joyful green paint converted the existing garage into useful living space. Work from home, entertain or use as a playroom this multipurpose space completes this multigenerational San Jose ADU Remodel.
