Changing Tides

Beginning this whole home remodel, we needed to erase and reconfigure the existing standard 1970's layout, to reflect our client's artistry and love of the high seas. Having lived in Hawaii and fallen in love with the islands and their spirit. They had a deep desire for their home to reflect that same Aloha spirit.

One design challenge was to embrace the exterior views of the greenery filled backyard while simultaneously creating an open, yet modern layout.

The outdated kitchen's confining walls were torn down relieving this space from being cramped. Out were the oak senseless upper cabinets that looked over the pennisula blocking site lines. Rolling baby blue and jolly blue porcelain tiles enshroud the kitchen backsplash brining forth a burst of color against the raven new cabinetry. An expansive island with the ability to seat six is the perfect place to entertain. All new stainless-steel appliances create a sleek modern feel to this renovated kitchen. A fine detail in this space are the sea foam green glass knobs and pulls delivering in a small yet significant ocean element.

The massive boxy staircase which once invoked feelings of constrictiveness, and darkness, was now enabled the living and dining areas to become one large open great room. The addition of large black framed windows, with nearly a full wall of panoramic doors, allow for expansive views of the outdoors, while serving as a seamless entension of the home's great room.

Stepping foot into the new beautifully designed great room, with its Grand vaulted ceilings, make for the perfect backdrop for the breathtaking, and dramatic floating staircase. The levitating wood treads, and glass railing brings not only drama, but dimension making in the ideal modern centerpiece.

The outdated 70s hall bath is unrecognizable, its transformation being the most dramatic. This heavenly space now is the host to a gorgeous stylish deep soaking tub, making the perfect place for relaxation after a long day. Paired is a curb less shower encased in Deep Blue Nocturnal Sea Mosaic tile. Two niches were installed to make storage of shampoo and soaps easy whether the soaker tub or shower is your choice. Stratos Spindrift peddled tiles wrap the entire bathroom floor tying in all the tide-colored hues. A whitecap-colored floating vanity and trough sink creates perfect harmony in this crashing wave colored bath. The wall backlight mirror is the perfect accessory to this revolutionized bath.

A beautiful hidden space within this home's unique layout is the balcony room, which will make for the perfect painting studio or office space. Radiant light greets you in this space that overlooks the new great room atop the glass staircase. The moment you stride into this newly remodeled San Jose Home, you are greeted with light cascading from every direction creating wave after wave of warmth. This project truly maximized the California dream of indoor-outdoor living, while encapsulating our clients love of the islands beauty and tranquility.

"  We certainly made the right choice in selecting May Construction to do our whole home remodel. We liked the idea of going with a design and build company and were impressed with the owner Greg May, who showed a good underdstanding of what we wanted and consistently came up with great solutions to overcome every challange and deliver a beautiful final product, transforming it from a tired old seventies-era house into a modern contemporary stunner. He and his team are highly organized and efficient, with a systematic approach through every phase of the project. They provided a comprehensive list of vendors for us to visit (and even the specific people to work with) to select all our products and materials, well in advance to accomodate typical lead times and make sure they'd be on site when needed. They assisgned us a designer, Donna, and a project manager, Eric, to oversee the project. Donna gave us expert guidance and help in choosing our materials and fixtures, while Eric and his on-site crew made sure the construction went smoothly and stayed on schedule. Best of all was the outstanding quality of all the subcontractors. They all were absolutely top-notch, experienced, knowledgeable, highly skilled craftsman. Over the years, May Construction has solidified relationships with good reliable vendors and subs who, in turn, are happy and eager to work with that company that they know and trust, and they all work well together. I must mention also that not only did the team do a fantastic job,  but they also actually managed to finish a month ahead of schedule, which is simply unheard of, and allowed us to move back in when we needed to! We couldn't be happier with our newly remodeled home. We absoutely love it. When people first walk in, they just say "Wow."
